Dr. Merten is President of George Mason University and a Special Partner of Capital Trust Ventures. Under his leadership George Mason has gained national and international acclaim for a number of significant initiatives and achievements ranging from becoming the first university to host the World Congress on Information Technology to being named among the most wired universities in the United States. Dr. Merten has the unique background of holding academic appointments in both engineering and business.  He has been a high-ranking advisor to the Department of Defense and been a director on numerous business and government councils. He currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Greater Washington Board of Trade, Northern Virginia Technology Council, First Potomac Realty Trust, Legg Mason Partners Fixed Income Trust, and Cardinal Bank.  He has also served on the boards of technology companies and a health system.  Prior to coming to George Mason University, Dr. Merten was the dean of the Johnson Graduate School of Management of Cornell University and was dean of the business school at the University of Florida. He has an undergraduate degree in mathematics from the University of Wisconsin, a master's degree in computer science from Stanford University, and a Ph.D. in computer science from Wisconsin.  He serves on the boards of multiple public and private companies.
