Gov. Thompson was the Governor of Wisconsin 1987 to 2001, and Secretary of Health and Human Services 2001-2005. He was the Governor of Wisconsin for an unprecedented four terms.  His signature initiatives as governor included the Wisconsin Works welfare reform and School Choice programs.  He also created the BadgerCare, designed to provide health coverage to those families above the poverty line without employer provided health insurance. He then replicated this program in several states when he became Secretary of Health and Human Services. From 1998 to 1999 he served as president of the Council of State Governments and helped lead a top-level delegation to the People's Republic of China. Tommy was Governor when he was appointed as US Secretary of Health and Human Services in 2001, where he played an influential role in shaping the country's healthcare policies.  Sec. Thompson resigned shortly after President Bush was inaugurated for his second term.  Tommy then became a senior partner at Akin Gump, a Washington, D.C., law firm, and joined Deloitte as a senior advisor and the chairman of their Center for Health Solutions.  Gov. Thompson announced his candidacy in early 2008 for the US Presidential election and even though he received significant votes in the Ames straw poll, in August 2007 he determined that he would drop out of the race to pursue other opportunities.  Gov. Thompson is now the President of Logistics Health Incorporated.  Gov. Thompson was elected to the Wisconsin State Assembly in 1966, became assistant Assembly minority leader in 1973, and Assembly minority leader in 1981.  He is a former Captain in the United States Army and United States Army Reserve, and holds a law degree from the University of Wisconsin Law School.  He serves on the boards of a number of private and public companies.
